Troubleshooting HP LaserJet Print Defects

PROBLEM COMMON CAUSE SOLUTION
No print down center of page. 1. Toner supply running low. Replace toner cartridge.
Light print. 1. Defective toner cartridge.
2. Dirty laser/scanner optics.
Replace toner cartridge.

Vertical black or gray lines. 1. Scratches on OPC drum.
2. Scratches on fuser roller.
Call 303-795-5676 for printer cleaning.
Replace toner cartridge. 
Horizontal gray line(s). 1. Contamination on OPC wiper blade. Do not use cotton bond paper. Replace toner.
Horizontal black lines randomly spaced. 1. Defective laser/scanner. Call 303-795-5676 for printer service.
Defects equally spaced 3 or more times per page. 1. OPC drum is damaged.
2. Fuser is damaged.
Replace toner cartridge.

Gray background on envelopes or heavy stock.  1. Print density set too low for media.
2. Moisture content of paper too low.
3. Room humidity too low.
Adjust print density.
Try different paper.
HP specifies 30-70% humidity for lasers.
Dropouts. Characters only partially printed. 1. Uneven moisture content of paper. Try different paper.
Toner Specks 1. Dirty paper path.
2. Paper does not meet specifications.
Clean paper path including transfer roller.
Try different paper.
Loose or smearing toner. 1. Paper too smooth or paper textured.
2. Contamination in printer.
3. Toner cartridge is defective.
Try different paper. No textured paper.
Clean paper path including transfer roller.
Replace toner cartridge.
Misformed or skewed characters. Crooked printing. 1. Paper not loaded correctly in tray.
2. Paper out of HP specifications.
Adjust paper guides to size of paper.
See your user manual for media specifications.

Troubleshooting Paper Jams

PROBLEM COMMON CAUSE SOLUTION
Not picking up paper from tray. 1. Media is too slick or too heavy.
2. Paper tray is overfilled.
3. Pickup impaired due to dirty rollers.
4. Cassette paper tray out of adjustment.
5. Pickup rollers are worn.
See your user manual for media specifications.
Remove some sheets of paper from tray.
Clean roller(s) with damp (not wet) cloth.
Check paper backstop for proper paper size.

Paper is stopping in printer. 1. Paper is stopping in printer.

2. Wrong paper size detected by printer.
3. Worn paper feed rollers.
4. Defective paper sensor.
5. Defective registration clutch.
Check for obstruction at leading edge of paper at jam.
Check paper size setting.

Picking up multiple sheets of paper. 1. Poorly cut paper.

2. Transparencies sticking together.

3. Separation pads worn or damaged.
4. Separation roller worn or defective clutch.
Try turning paper around or try different paper.
Remove and flex media or feed one sheet at a time.

Paper jams from feeding crooked. 1. Paper guides adjusted too tight or loose.
2. Obstruction in paper path.

Adjust paper guides to just touch both sides of paper.
Check for obstruction at leading edge of paper at jam.
Paper jams in fuser. FUSER IS HOT! 1. Torn fixing film or defective fuser. Call 303-795-5676 for printer service.
Paper jams at output. 1. Obstruction in output rollers.
2. Worn output rollers.
Check for obstruction in output rollers.
